Nicola Wordie (@livestock farmher) from Mains of Cairnborrow near Huntly in Aberdeenshire, along with her dad George have built a solid reputation for producing top quality sought after Charolais stores which they sell mainly at Thainstone mart.
They are long term customers of our popular protein concentrate Champion RumiTech 35 which balances perfectly with their home grown barley. As calves come inside for the winter we analyse silage to determine its protein content, then create a ration including silage, spring barley and our Champion RumiTech 35 pellets.
David McCartney, our beef and sheep specialist explains more, “Champion RumiTech 35 is a great option for customers who grow their own cereals. We always start by analysing the silage to check its protein content so we can determine how much concentrate we need to add to the diet. We don’t want to waste protein or undersupply the calves, so it’s important to check the nutritional content of the silage first. Because the concentrate is fully mineralised, when mixed with the silage and barley, it gives the calves all they need. It’s a simple and cost effective ration, but most importantly, the calves perform really well on it.”
Nicola commented, “We’ve been feeding Champion RumiTech 35 for as long as I can remember but last year was the first year we’d fed it in a TMR which has been made possible by our new shed. The product fits our system well, it means we don’t have to buy in too much protein, and the calves consistently achieve fantastic growth rates and crucially, do well for us in the sales. It helps us to be as sustainable as possible, which is a key focus for us.”
