Winter Horse Care Checklist

As the colder months approach, it’s essential to ensure your yard is ready for the challenges of winter. Our in-store Equine specialists share some things to consider before heading into the colder months to ensure a healthy and hygienic yard.

1. STABLE MAINTENANCE

Take the opportunity to give your stables a good clear out before winter. Have you cleaned under rubber mats and applied a dry hygiene powder (such as Biosuper) to mop up ammonia smells? This is worth doing before the stable is fully occupied. Are you stocked up for bedding? Decide on your bedding for the season – if you are unsure or need to make changes, talk to our in-store teams who can help you make the right choice. Harbro Country Stores stock a wide range of different bedding, dependent on your horse’s needs.

2. BINS AND BUCKETS

Give your feed bins a good clean out to avoid mould and palatability issues. Consider replacing any damaged bins as a deterrent against rodents. Feed and water buckets should also be given a thorough deep clean. Feed and water hygiene is crucial to your horse’s health.

3. THINK FORAGE

Have you sorted your forage supply for the winter? Remember any switch from one type or source of forage to another should be done gradually. If you have a good doer, or a horse that’s ulcer prone, have you considered slow feeder nets? These can be very useful to slow down intake and reduce waste. For horses with hay allergies, consider a hay steamer, rather than soaking (which can get quite unpleasant in the winter).

4. GROOMING

Freshen up your grooming kit – give brushes etc a good wash ready for winter and replace any that are worn – you’ll need them more in the colder months! Remember rugged horses should have their rug removed and checked once a day and given a good groom at least once a week to maintain skin/coat health.

5. EVERYDAY EQUIPMENT

Check that mucking out equipment is in good order – forks, brushes, shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows. Repair or replace as necessary. Additionally remember to stock up on de-icing salt for your yard and field access BEFORE the cold weather comes – and everyone needs it at the same time!

6. FINALLY…..FEEDING ADVICE

If you have a horse that struggles with condition over the winter speak to our specialists well in advance to come up with a feeding plan. The above tips should help to make for a less stressful winter all round for you and your equine friend. Contact your local Harbro Country store for more information.
